Digital video and audio associated with University of Maine System programs or activities, whether live or recorded, must be accessible to persons with disabilities when:

  • Provided to the general public, such as via a website
  • Provided to a broad population, such as a campus, the student body or a department, especially when the population is known to include persons with affecting disabilities
  • The Equal Opportunity office, Human Resources or a campus disability services office has approved a related accommodation request

Detailed Information

Accessible digital video has:

  • accurate captions (for live or recorded video)
  • audio description (additional audio narration of any visual-only content in the video such as charts or images that are not fully explained audibly)

Accessible digital audio (such as podcasts) have:

  • accurate transcripts

Both digital video and audio must be presented using a platform or technology that itself is accessible, e.g., the video player's play, stop, forward and rewind controls must be accessible.

We have provided a list of Live Event Captioning (CART) providers who can add accurate captions to your live online video or audio events.

INFO: When a video includes "automatic captions" added by machine, they must be corrected.  There are 3rd-party services that will correct automatic captions for you.
