How to Activate Your University of Maine System (UMS) Account

This article explains how to activate your University of Maine System (UMS) @maine.edu account.

What you will need

Before you begin, make sure you have:

• Your 7-digit Student or Employee ID number (EMPLID or MaineStreet ID)
• Your activation key (case sensitive)
• Your date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY format)
• Access to a secure device with an internet connection

Instructions

1. Go to the User Account Management page at accounts.maine.edu
2. Click Activate your account.
   • You will see “Activation Key Required” next to the link.
3. Enter your Student or Employee ID number.
   • This is your 7-digit University identification number.
   • Also known as EMPLID or MaineStreet ID.
   • It typically starts with a 0 or 1.
   • If you are a new student, this number was mailed to you.
4. Enter your activation key.
   • The key is case sensitive.
   • It may have been sent to you after registration or provided by the IT Service Desk.
   • It may have been sent by email from accounts@maine.edu with the subject line "UMS Account activation key."
     This email is often marked as Spam. If you do not see this email in your inbox, please check your Spam or Trash folders.
   • If you need an activation key, contact the IT Service Desk.
5. Click Continue.
6. On the next page, re-enter your ID number and activation key.
7. Enter your date of birth in this format: MM/DD/YYYY (two-digit month, two-digit day, four-digit year).
8. Create your password. Your password must:
   • Be at least 8 characters long
   • Include at least one capital letter
   • Include at least one number
   • Not begin with a number

9. Create three security questions and answers.
   • All three questions must be completed.
   • Choose questions and answers you will remember years from now.
   • Avoid time-sensitive answers or questions with many possible responses.
10. Click Activate Account.
11. If successful, you will see a confirmation screen displaying your username and University email address.

After Activation

• You can access your University email at Gmail (External Link) within 15 to 30 minutes.
• It may take up to 2 hours before you can access other systems.
• When signing in, use your username only. Do not include “@maine.edu”.
