How students can get or access specialized software other than physically going to a computer lab

To facilitate student access to lab software, many vendors have either moved to offer applications free for a time period or free for student use.  While USIT works to deliver RemoteLab as a way for students access software, some applications are available now for students to download on their own devices.  The intent of RemoteLab is to offer applications that are necessary to complete coursework but have license limitations such as on-premise license servers.

Free Student License

Free student licenses of software are available for academic use.  To access these academic licenses, students must sign up for an account with the vendor using their @maine.edu email address.

Unity 3D 

Microsoft Office 365 - All students, staff, and faculty receive Office 365 and can install on up to 5 personal computers.

SAS Studio (replaced SAS University Edition)

Time-Based Student License

Timed student licenses are academic licenses that grant students the ability to install and use it for free for a period of time.  These time frames are different from vendor to vendor and are noted below.

Autodesk (all products) - 3 years

Tableau Desktop - 1 year

Tableau Prep - 1 year

IBM SPSS - 30 day trial

Limited Paid Apps

Limited paid apps are those that the vendors have opened for University of Maine System faculty and students to install on their own machines as a response to school closures, remote learning, and COVID-19.
