“The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to” after changing password

Summary

This article explains what to do if your University computer is still using your old maine.edu password and you see the error “The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to.”

Body

Issue / Error

After changing your maine.edu password, your University device may still try to use your old password. You may see the following error message when attempting to sign in:

ERROR MESSAGE: "The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to."

Solution

INFO: Windows users – If you receive this error, it will automatically time out after 5 minutes from your first failed sign-in attempt. Try signing in again after that time. This is especially common when returning to work after being away (e.g., the next day or after lunch) following a password change.
INFO: A temporary fix to this issue (which should only be used if both new and old account passwords trigger "incorrect" errors rather than a lockout) is to turn off internet/enable Airplane Mode for Wifi, or disengage the ethernet cable for wired internet, and then restart the device. Afterwards, remain in Airplane/disengaged and the old account password should allow login.

Follow these steps to update your device with your new password:

  1. Sign in to your computer with your old maine.edu password.
  2. If you are off campus, connect to the University’s Remote Access VPN. (If you are on a University campus network, VPN is not needed.)
  3. Lock your computer:
    • Press Control + Alt + Delete or keyboard shortcut Windows Key + L
  4. Wait about one minute. During this time, your computer will attempt to connect to the University’s Active Directory server to update your credentials.
  5. Log back in using your new maine.edu password.
INFO: After logging in with your old password, you may see a memo that says "Your credentials are out of date. Lock your computer and enter your updated credentials." You can safely ignore this message. The computer will still update once it connects to the University’s servers. Following the memo immediately may sometimes trigger another lockout.
WARNING: If your computer unlocks successfully with the new password, restart your computer and log in again with the new password. If it still only accepts your old password, continue using it until the update completes.
