How to change a username (maine.edu email address) to a preferred name or after a legal name change.

Instructions

DANGER: It is not advisable to change a username in the middle of a semester or course. This action can cause multiple problems for students, professors, and administrators.
INFO: E-mail addressed to your previous e-mail address will only be forwarded for a limited time (currently six months); thereafter, e-mail addressed to your old email address will not be delivered.

For Students

  1. Change your name in MaineStreet
    • For a legal name change
      1. Contact your campus' Registrar's Office to request a legal name change
    • For a preferred name change
      1. Log into mycampus.maine.edu
      2. Click the Student Center icon under the LaunchPad
      3. Select My Profile from the menu on the left
      4. Select Biological Information from the menu
      5. Click the Edit (pencil) icon next to Preferred Name
      6. Update your preferred name then click Save
  2. Once the preferred or legal name has been updated in MaineStreet, wait for the system to sync (which typically happens once each business day). Once the system sync has occurred, the new preferred/legal name will be an available option to select for the new ID.
  3. Navigate to accounts.maine.edu
  4. Click on Change your UMS user account username and follow the instructions
Info: Applicants are not longer allowed (via self-service) to rename their accounts prior to acceptance or matriculation.

For Faculty and Staff

  1. Legal Name Change
    Once a name has been legally changed, submit the Individual Data Sheet change form with information to Human Resources to update your HR records.  You will be required to provide an updated Social Security Card.  Submit both documents by uploading to our secure SharePoint site:  How to Submit Paperwork, Forms and Spreadsheets
  2. Preferred Name
    • Employees will contact their HR Business Partner or HR Director to request the non-legal name change.
    • HR submits the Individual Data Sheet change form with information to Payroll
  3. Once the preferred or legal name has been updated in MaineStreet, wait for the system to sync (which typically happens once each business day). Once the system sync has occurred, the new preferred/legal name will be an available option to select for the new ID.
  4. Navigate to accounts.maine.edu
  5. Click on Change your UMS user account username and follow the instructions
