Which gender identity and pronoun options are available to choose from?

The list of current gender identity and pronoun options that are available to select via both Employee Self Service and the Student Center can be viewed below:

Gender Identity Options

Gender Identity Description
Agender An Individual who does not identigy themselves as having a particular gender.
Demigender An individual who feels a particual conncetion to a certain gender or genders and may identify partially, but not wholly, with a certain gender or genders. It is an umbrella term for other identities, such as demiboy, demigirl, deminonbiary, demiagender, demifluid, and more.
Genderfluid An individual woh does not identfy as having a single, unchanging gender.
Genderqueer An individual who finds that preexisting sexual orientations or gender identities do not fit them.
Man An individual who identifies as a man or male regardless of sex assignment at birth.
Nonbinary An individual who is neither exclusively woman or man or is in between or beyond both genders.
Not in List An individual should use this value when their gender identity is not in the list.
Prefer not to Say An individual should use this value when they prefer not to disclose their gender identity.
Trans Man An individual whose sex assigned at birth was female but whose gender identy is male, man, or transgender man.
Trans Woman An individual whose sex assigned at birth was male but whose gender identy is female, woman, or transgender woman.
Transgender An individual whose sex assigned at birth was different than what they presently identify themselves as.
Two-Spirit An individual, typically of Native American or Indigenous heritage, who identifies aws having both a masculine and a feminine spirit.
Unspecified Identity that is unspecified by the individual.
Woman An individual who identifies as a woman or female regardless of sex assigned at birth.

Pronoun Options

Pronoun Description
Any Pronouns are Acceptable Used when any pronouns are acceptable to be used.
He/Him/His He/Him/His are gender-specific pronouns that are usually used to refer to men or boys. This is different than gender neutral pronouns, which do not associate the person being referred to with any specific gender.
He/They Used when an individual uses both male and gender neutral pronouns interchangeably and without preference.
Not in List Use this value when the pronoun is not in the list
Please Ask Please ask the individual what pronouns they use.
Prefer Not to Say Individuals should use this value when they do not wish to disclose pronouns.
She/Her/Hers She/Her/Hers is a set of gender-specific pronouns typically used to refer to women or girls. Some nonbinary folks, as well as genderfluid or genderqueer folks, may also use the She/Her/Hers as pronouns.
She/They Used when an individual uses both female or Gender neutral pronouns interchangeable and without preference.
They/Them/Theirs Used when an indviduals identifies as gender neutral or gender non-conforming.
Unspecified Pronouns are unspecified by the individuals.
Use my name only Use my Name only should be used when an individual do not wish to be referred as any pronoun. Instead they want their name to be used to address them.
Xe/Xem/Xir Xe/Xem/Xir and its variations are gender neutral pronouns can be used to when the individual wants to be referred to as people who are non-binary, genderfluid, genderqueer, trans, and/or do not identify with the gender binary.
Ze/Hir/Hirs Pronouns used in the trans community. These pronouns offer inclusion and accuracy for someone who does not identify by the male/female gender classification.
Ze/Zir/Zirs Pronouns used in the trans community. These pronouns offer inclusion and accuracy for someone who does not identify by the male/female gender classification.

Instructions for Students

Selecting Gender Identity and Pronoun via the Student Information System

1.  Go to https://mycampus.maine.edu.

2.  Click the Student Center icon in the LaunchPad.

3.  Select the My Profile drop down in the left-hand navigation of the Student Center.  Then select Biographical Information.

4.  The top box, Names, allows you to edit your preferred name.  Select the pencil to update your preferred name and select save.

5.  The Gender Identity box allows you to update your pronouns and gender identity.  Select the pencil next to the item to update, choose from the options presented, and select save.

6.  Additional information on Gender and Pronouns can be found by using the link in the left-hand navigation called Gender and Pronoun Information, under My Profile.

Instructions for Employees

Selecting Gender Identity and Pronoun via the HR System

INFO: If you are a student AND an employee, you will need to make gender identity and pronoun selections in both the Student Information System and the HR system in order for them to be reflected in each.

1.  Go to https://mycampus.maine.edu.

2.  Click the HR icon in the LaunchPad.

3.  Select the Personal Details tile on the Employee Self Service page.

4.  Select the Gender Identity tile on the Personal Details page.

5.  Select your details in the Gender Details section.

6.  Select the magnify glass next to Pronouns and Gender Identity to select from the drop down menu then click save.
