macOS 14 Sonoma

Information to consider before upgrading to macOS Sonoma and general guidance about upgrading to Sonoma.

Apple has released its latest version of macOS called Sonoma (14) on September 26th, 2023. 

As of January 10th, 2024, macOS Sonoma is generally available to managed macOS devices.  Users may upgrade at their convenience by using the Apple Software Update utility in the Apple menu on their device.  MacOS Sonoma will be set as the default for all freshly deployed machines and will be required for all supported devices by May 2024.

  • User focused information: 

    • MacOS Sonoma brings a slew of new features and functionality like new screen savers, presenter overlay in video chatting, intelligent form detection in PDFS, and other features.

  • Device compatibility: Apple has released the following list of compatible devices: 

    • iMac 2019 and later

    • Mac Pro 2019 and later

    • iMac Pro 2017

    • Mac Studio 2022 and later

    • MacBook Air 2018 and later

    • Mac mini 2018 and later

    • MacBook Pro 2018 and later

  • Known application incompatibilities found with macOS Sonoma:
    • Connecting to SMB shares fail to authenticate.
      • Upgrade to 14.1 or later and use the "domainName\" before the username to authenticate.
    • SPSS 29 is not yet compatible.
      • IBM has released a hotfix that adds some support, but not fully functional.
    • Adobe Reader cannot print PDF files.
      • Upgrade to 23.06.20360 or later.
    • JAMF Connect (In pilot stage for UMS-Managed Macs) will present with a black screen on macOS 14.2.
      • Upgrade Jamf Connect to 2.29.0 (deployed by IT) prior to updating.
