Build Reports using IT Managed Datasets

Body

This article provides information on how to build reports using IT Managed datasets (semantic models).

Detailed Information

If you have access to an IT-managed semantic model for reporting, please follow these steps to create a report.

  1. Open Power BI Desktop and create a new report. Select "Power BI semantic models" from the “Get Data” menu. Be sure to click on the drop-down arrow, not on the icon above it.

Showing the Get Data dropdown menu and the location for the Power BI datasets button.

  2. Choose the Power BI semantic model you would like to use and design your report. To verify which semantic model you are using, you can see the name of the semantic model you are using on the bottom right corner of your screen.
showing the messaging which identifies the dataset name in get data screen.
  3. Apply Row Level Security if needed. See Row Level Security in Power BI page for more information.
  4. Save as PBIX/PBIT file to the Document Library in your department's folder in the UMS Power BI HUB SharePoint Library.

  5. Publish the report to the workspace in Power BI ServicePerform additional Row Level Security Testing.  "Test As Roles" feature only works if the report and the semantic model live in the same workspace.

showing the location of the publish button.
  6. Now you have Power BI reports that do not use their own semantic model, but rather use a shared semantic model from the IT-managed workspace. This can be easily seen in Power BI Service with a lineage view.
