University-managed MacOS device does not have internet at time of login

Summary

How to workaround issue with macOS user-based EduRoam certs and lack of internet at login

Body

University-managed macOS computers currently use a user-based certificate for Eduroam. This prevents the computer from connecting to Eduroam until the user is logged in.

INFO:  End User Technology is testing using computer-based Eduroam certificates for macOS in Dev to eventually prevent this issue.

Solution

Login using cached credentials

If a user has logged into the workstation before, they can login by clicking "Local Login" at the bottom login window and sign in with your UMS username and password. This will allow the user to select Eduroam once at a desktop.

Or connect to an alternative wifi name from the JAMF Connect login window to sign in with your UMS email and password.

Connect the device to a wired Ethernet connection

Connect the device to a registered Ethernet dongle or dock for the initial login, after that the user should have cached credentials for future logins.

Environment

  • University-managed macOS
  • Eduroam
  • Pilot devices running JAMF Connect.
