This article walks you through signing into your University of Maine System (UMS) account using a passkey stored in the Microsoft Authenticator app as your multi-factor authentication (MFA) method.
Before You Begin
You will need both of the following before starting:
- 💻 The device you are signing in on
- 📱 Your mobile device with the Microsoft Authenticator app and a passkey already set up
Guided Walkthrough
Use the interactive walkthrough below to follow along step by step. You can also continue to the written instructions below.
These instructions use a Windows 11 computer and an Android smartphone. If you are using a different operating system, such as macOS, Linux, or Windows 10, or a different mobile device, such as an iPhone or iPad, your options may look slightly different.
- 💻 When prompted, enter your full @maine.edu email address, then click Next.
- 💻 Enter your password, then click Sign in.
- 💻 You will see the message "Your device will open a security window. Follow the instructions there to sign in."
- 💻 In the Windows Security "Choose a passkey" box, click iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
- 💻 A QR code will appear on your screen.
- 📱 On your mobile device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- 📱 In the Microsoft Authenticator app, tap the QR code scanner button.
- 📱 Scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen.
- 💻 Your computer will display the message "Device connected! Continue on your device."
- 📱 When prompted to "Use your saved passkey for login.microsoft.com," tap Continue.
- 💻 If asked "Stay signed in?" click Yes if you are on your own device.
- 💻 You are now signed in to your UMS account.

- Requires a web browser on a computer to complete sign-in
