This article explains the features, models, credits, and usage limits available in the University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu workspace.
Detailed Information
How ChatGPT Edu Usage Works
ChatGPT Edu provides core features for everyday use, while certain advanced features use monthly credits. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right tools for your task and avoid unexpected interruptions.
Features Included for Everyday Use
The following features are available to ChatGPT Edu users and do not consume credits:
- GPT-5.5 Instant: The default model for writing, summarization, brainstorming, question answering, coding assistance, and general conversation.
- Web search: Find current information, verify facts, and locate up-to-date sources.
- File uploads: Upload documents, spreadsheets, images, PDFs, and other supported files for analysis or reference.
- Canvas: Use a side-by-side workspace for editing text and code.
- Projects: Organize related conversations, files, and instructions.
- Custom GPTs: Create specialized versions of ChatGPT for specific tasks.
- Study Mode: Work through questions and problems with step-by-step guidance.
- Memory: Allow ChatGPT to remember selected preferences and context across conversations.
These features support most academic and administrative work.
Advanced Features That Use Credits
Certain advanced features consume credits when used. UMS users receive a monthly credit allocation based on their assigned group. If you belong to more than one eligible group, you receive the highest applicable allocation.
- Advanced reasoning: More intensive reasoning for complex analysis, research synthesis, data analysis, and technical problem-solving.
- Deep Research: Extended, multi-source research that returns a detailed report with citations.
- Image Generation: Create images from text descriptions.
- Advanced Voice: Hold natural, real-time voice conversations with ChatGPT.
Available models, features, and credit costs may change as OpenAI updates the platform.
Models and Usage
How ChatGPT Selects a Model
New conversations begin with the UMS-recommended default configuration: GPT-5.5 Instant, Low reasoning, and Standard speed.
- Everyday writing, summarization, brainstorming, and question answering use the default configuration.
- More complex tasks may benefit from a reasoning model or a higher reasoning level.
- Users with access to additional models can select one from the model picker.
Legacy Models
Available models may change as OpenAI retires older options and introduces new ones. For most users, GPT-5.5 Instant is the best choice for day-to-day work.
Tips for Managing Usage
- Use the default model for most work. GPT-5.5 Instant is designed to handle the majority of everyday tasks.
- Reserve advanced reasoning for complex tasks. Use it for detailed analysis, careful logic, or multi-step problem-solving.
- Use Deep Research selectively. It is best for work that requires a thorough, multi-source investigation.
- Use web search for simple lookups. Web search is better suited for quick fact-checking and current-information requests.
- Keep prompts focused. Clear, specific instructions usually produce better results with fewer follow-up questions.
Files, Apps, and Conversation Limits
File Upload Limits
ChatGPT Edu supports CSV files, Excel spreadsheets, PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint files, images, and code files.
- Up to 10 files can be uploaded per conversation.
- Up to 25 files can be uploaded per Project.
- The maximum file size is 512 MB per file. CSV and spreadsheet limits may be lower depending on file structure and row size.
Apps and MCP Connectors
ChatGPT Edu can support Apps, formerly called connectors, that connect ChatGPT to approved external tools and data sources.
Availability depends on UMS workspace settings. An App must be enabled or approved before it can be used in the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace.
Custom MCP connectors can connect ChatGPT to institutional tools and internal systems. Creating custom MCP Apps is not currently enabled for general UMS users.
Context Window
The context window determines how much information ChatGPT can consider within a single conversation. Larger context windows allow ChatGPT to work with longer documents, more uploaded material, and more conversation history.
If a conversation becomes very long or includes many large files, starting a new conversation or asking ChatGPT to summarize earlier content can help.
