AD Connect

AD Connect is the University of Maine System’s backend identity synchronization service responsible for syncing user accounts, passwords, and group memberships from the University Active Directory (UAD) to Microsoft Azure Active Directory and the UMS Office 365 tenant. It plays a critical role in ensuring that faculty, staff, and students can access Microsoft 365 services using their UMS credentials.

Currently, AD Connect syncs defined users (along with their passwords), groups, and optionally computer objects (such as Windows 10/11 devices) to Azure AD. Future support for syncing additional device data is planned. While this is not an end-user-facing service, it is essential for maintaining functional and secure access to cloud services.

Any misconfiguration or outage of the AD Connect service can disrupt access to Office 365 services, prevent password synchronization, or result in inaccurate user or group information in Azure AD.
