Physical Books Processing (Special Collections)

Purpose:

Finish processing physical books going to Special Collections.

Physical Books (Special Collections)

  1. The books going to the Special Collections will have a blue "Special Collections" flag in them.
  2. If copy 1 do NOT cover in Mylar cover.
  3. If copy 2, remove dust jacket and cover in Mylar.
    1. Measure and cut: Cut your Mylar sheet so that it is roughly 1 to 2 inches longer than the unfolded dust jacket (about 0.5 to 1 inch of overhang on each side).
    2. Align the bottom edge: Open the dust jacket flat. Slide the bottom edge of the jacket into the bottom flap of the Mylar cover.
    3. Fold the top edge: Fold the top Mylar flap down to meet the top edge of the dust jacket. Use a bone folder to score a sharp crease along the top edge. Ensure the jacket isn't caught inside the crease itself, it should just glide inside the pocket.
    4. Attach to the book: Remove the book from the jacket, but keep the jacket inside the Mylar. Place the book's spine onto the center of the protected jacket and fold the front and back hardcovers over, wrapping the Mylar and jacket together.
    5. Secure the flaps: Fold the inside Mylar/paper flaps over the edges of the book's hardcover. You can either tuck these flaps tightly inside the book boards or use a tiny piece of acid-free tape to anchor the Mylar edge to the inside of the book cover (do not tape the book or jacket directly).
  4. Stamp the inside front cover with Fogler Library property stamp. If the inside from cover has printing, or is too dark, stamp the first blank page.
  5. If hardcover, use single sided tattle tape (white) and the metal shim to insert a tattle tape into the spine.
  6. If paperback, use double sided tattle tape (green) and place in gutter of random page.
  7. For books purchased with gifts funds (noted by flag in book). Glue the appropriate gift plate on the front flysheet.
