Creating Trackable QR Codes

Tags qr-code qr

Students, staff, or faculty may want to know if the University provides tools to create customized QR codes. While the University itself doesn't have an official program to distribute, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Web Office has some guidance on how to create QR codes.

Instructions

  1. Go to Google’s URL builder to build a trackable URL for your QR Code.

  2. Once you have your URL, go to a QR Code generator to create the QR Code. (I use The 2D Code QR Code Generator and QR Code Generator from the ZXing Project.) Generate your QR Code. Download to your computer or device.\

  3. Use your smartphone and app for reading QR Codes to test your QR Code to make sure it points to the proper web page BEFORE having it printed on your promotional item.

  4. Later, you can use Google Analytics to see how many times users used your QR Code to get to your website. In Google Analytics, click on Acquisition/Campaigns (example: “networking” for the QR Code printed on the new 4-H card, which points users to the Tell Us Your Story form on the 4-H Foundation website.
