Apple introduced new photo formats in iOS 11 which provide increased quality, while taking up less space. Unfortunately images in the new HEIC format generally need to be converted to an image format such as JPG/JPEG for older Macs or Windows computers to be able to view them.

Convert on macOS
How to convert HEIC to JPG using the "Preview" app.
- Open the photo in "Preview"
- On the top menu on the left, choose "File"
- Scroll down and select "Export"
- A dialog box will open that will allow you specify the format that you wish.
- Use the drop down arrow to the right of the "Format" option to select "JPEG"
Convert on Windows
How to convert a HEIC photo file to a JPEG using "Paint" app
1. Right-click on the photo that needs to be converted.
2. Scroll down to "Open with".
3. Click on the arrow on the right and select "Paint". The "Paint" application will open the photo.
- On the upper-left menu, select "File"
- Next, select "Save As"
- Select "JPEG"
- A dialog box will open that will allow you to relocate, or rename or change the file type. If you do not wish to make any further changes, click "Save" and you will be done.
Tip: The "Paint" application saves to the "Pictures" folder by default.
