How to Install SPSS (UM)

The following instructions provide a guide on how to Download the software, Request a license for use, Install the software, and Apply a license.

This software is only licensed for use by UMaine and UMM for Faculty, Staff, and Students.

Requests can take up to one business day to fulfill during normal operating hours.

Download the software

  1. Download the Windows SPSS Installer package
  2. Download the AMOS installer package, if needed for your desired version

Request a License to use the software

IMPORTANT: If you will use the SPSS software while off-campus, your will require a license activation key which can be requested using this SPSS License Request Form link. Requests can take up to one business day to fulfill during normal operating hours. 
  1. Use this form to request your license to use the software
  2. Save your license number as it is needed for the installation process to activate the software prior to use.

Installing the software

Windows

  1. Double-click the SPSS file to mount the installer.
  2. Click the Windows folder and open setup.exe to start the install wizard.
  3. Select Install IBM SPSS Statistics
  4. This install will upgrade any existing installs of SPSS. Click Next on the first screen.
  5. Accept the License Agreement and click Next.
  6. Leave the install location as the default and click Next.
  7. Click Install to begin the install process.
  8. When it finishes, keep Start IBM SPSS Statistics now and click Finish to launch SPSS.

macOS

WARNING: If you are using Ventura (macOS 13) you MUST use version 29.0.2 or higher.
  1. Download the SPSS .ISO file to a known location on your device
  2. Open the SPSS ISO file you downloaded and navigate to the MacOS folder to find the SPSS .pkg installer.  Launch this installer and follow the prompts. 
  3. When you launch SPSS the first time you may see a Server Login: Local Computer window pop up. Click the check box next to Local Computer and click OK to proceed. 

 

Apply your SPSS license to activate

IMPORTANT: If you will use the SPSS software while off-campus, your will require a license activation key which can be requested using this SPSS License Request Form link. Requests can take up to one business day to fulfill during normal operating hours.
  1. Launch the SPSS application
  2. Click the "Launch License Wizard." 
  3. On the "Product Authorization" screen select either: 
    1. "Authorized user license" for personal devices, off campus use, or devices with limit network.
    2. If you skipped the step to Request a License, please refer to that section above first.
    3. Use the License Activation key obtained from steps above for request a license.

Important: Workstations and non-mobile devices being used in fixed locations on campus should be licensed with a "Concurrent user License" by entering the license server address  "spss.um.maine.edu" when requested.
