Technology Types Glossary

Definitions of the "technologies" listed in the "Technology Descriptions" question in the Technology Review Request form.

Detailed Information

Software for installation on a computer - programs or applications that run on a computer and require installation from a CD or DVD disc, or are downloaded from a website and then installed on the computer.


Web-based service or application (accessed with a web-browser) - programs or applications that are accessed with a web browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, and do not require the installation of any software on the user's computer.


Cloud-based - any service where the underlying technology is located "somewhere in the cloud" and not installed at a university location.  For example, most web-based services are "cloud-based", as well as some types of technology infrastructure, such as "storage" or "servers" in Amazon's AWS Cloud Computing Services.


Mobile app - any program or application designed for installation and use from a mobile device such as a phone or tablet


Digital materials (includes or creates video, audio, documents, books, forms) - video, audio, documents, books, forms in digital format and accessed using an electronic device.


DEVELOPMENT services for a website or application - Contracted service for building or custolmizing an application, software, or website.


Training services - Contracted service to train university employees, students or other affiliated persons


Laboratory technology - Any technology for use in a campus engineering, science, nursing, etc., laboratory


Streaming Video/Audio - Video or audio delivered on-demand by a website or communication technology such as Zoom.


End-user computer or digital device - Computer or other digital devices, such as a phone or tablet, for use by the consumer of a technology services


An on-premise server installed in a university location - Specialized industrial-strength computer used for delivering services such as websites to users, or processing large amounts of data.


Other hardware (not an end-user device) connected to the University network - Any other electronic device, such as a security camera, network device, "smart" device, building automation, etc.


Highly-visual activities such as CAD, GIS, data visualization, Image manipulation, etc. - Special case of technologies that require end-users to have "normal" vision.


Web site or information display for presenting information to students or the public - Website, information kiosk, digital information display, etc. that displays information to students or the public in a university building, campus or through a website.
