Class Scheduling Data

This article provides historical information regarding the 2022 Data Governance project focused on standardizing the coding used for class information.

Detailed Information

Class Scheduling Data: Consistency Is the Key

A critical component of optimizing the MaineStreet class search experience for students is having consistent and clear data elements for every class section, across the UMS. A Data Governance workgroup — comprised of our university registrars, representatives from course scheduling, and IT—is working to analyze options for developing the most informative and consistent coding of classes.
In addition to improving class search usability, our shared vision of consistent coding has advantages for students, faculty, and staff alike, resulting in:

  • Ease of navigating across UMS campuses
  • Increased facility to coordinate emergent needs, such as COVID contingency planning
  • Accurate & timely fulfillment of data requests to support decision-making

Toward this end of consistent & transparent class coding, we have:

  • Identified, analyzed & prioritized all coding data elements used in class scheduling (see list below)
  • Implemented consistent Instruction Mode coding & definitions (summer 2021)
  • Developed proposal for consistent course component codes & definitions (fall 2021)
  • Begun development of proposals for consistent coding of Facility/Room, Location, and Campus elements

Class Data Elements

One of the major tasks accomplished by the workgroup was to identify the administrative data elements of a class search to enable addressing consistency across campuses and departments. Below are the administrative data elements used for scheduling courses that we are working on aligning, as well as the data elements most frequently used in basic class searches. Additionally, many of the administrative data elements can be used as search criteria in an advanced class search.

Administrative data elements used for scheduling classes

  • Term
  • Session
  • Section & Associated Class
  • Component (e.g., Lecture, Lab)
  • Class Type (Enrollment/Non-Enrollment)
  • Campus & Location
  • Academic Org
  • Instruction Mode
  • Attribute & Value
  • Start/End Dates
  • Facility (displays as Room)
  • Day(s) & Time
  • Instructor
  • Enrollment Capacity
  • Class Notes

Primary Data Elements used in a Basic Class Search

  • Term
  • Subject (e.g., ENG)
  • Course Number (e.g., 101)
  • Course Career (e.g., Undergraduate)
  • Show Open Classes Only (filters out closed courses)

Class Search Examples

There are many different places one can search for classes. The following are examples of how the search results appear depending on where a search is conducted.
