ImageNow Mail Merge Printer--Initial set-up on Client

Setting up the ImageNow Mail Merge Printer

Note: In order to perform this process, you must have Administrator privileges on the computer being updated.

Please note: The searchkey.ini file needs to be edited for each department. If there is a user in the same department, get their config file and edit the one in the following installation folder. It is helpful to have a document file that has the correct heading for comparison and testing. Once you have a successful install, save the configs to GoogleDrive with the department name for later use if needed.

  1. Download two files from the Google Drive folder Mail Merge Setup (SDS) Place them on the computer’s desktop for easy access. Please note—if the folder needs to be unzipped, be sure that you rename the folder to “ImageNow Mail Merge” before continuing.

Mail Merge Set-Up (SDS)

  1. ImageNow Mail Merge
  2. SetupImageNowPrinter.exe

  1. Open the Devices and Printers window via the control panel and rename the ImageNow Printer to ImageNow Printer Temp

  1. Open the Windows C: \drive

Copy the “ImageNow Mail Merge” folder from the desktop, to the Windows C: \ drive

You will now have the following hierarchy:

C:\ImageNow Mail Merge

            import

            printer

            after_print

            log

            pcprint

                        temp

                        linkpage.ini

                        searchkey.ini

                        printsearch.vbs

  1. Next, browse to C:\Programs Files (x86)\ImageNow\printer\setup folder
  2. Place the “SetupImageNowPrinter.exe” file from where you put it on the desktop  into the “setup” folder

  3. Right click on “SetupImageNowPrinter.exe” and Run as Administrator. This will create a new ImageNow Printer under Printers and Devices
  4. ReOpen the Devices and Printer window and rename this new printer  “ImageNow Printer Mail Merge”

In Devices and Printers rename the “ImageNow Print- Temp” back to “ImageNow Printer

  1. Type  “regedit.exe” in the Start menu search bar. This must be run as admin.

  1. In the registry, navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Print > Printers > ImageNow Printer Mail Merge > PrinterDriverData

  1. Right click in the right section of the registry settings and select New > String Value

Label the Value Name as ‘Scripting File’ and Value Data as the path to the linkpage.ini file. Be sure to be consistent in spacing and case.
  C:\ImageNow Mail Merge\printer\pcprint\linkpage.ini

  1. Close the registry.
  2. Open Task Manager as admin, select “Services”, Scroll down to “Spooler” Rt. click and select “restart”
  3. Verify the printers are correctly named

  1. Edit Capture Profiles if needed. (If you are copying a inscan.xml file, go to %appdata% >roaming>ImageNow)
  2. Test print to both ImageNow printers to make sure they are both working as expected.

(Please note: The printsearch.vbs script may request permission to run. Watch for the pop-up and check “do not show this message again”)

TROUBLESHOOTING:

If the printers aren’t naming correctly, delete them and reinstall.

If the printer setup isn’t working, the installer may be corrupted. Download a new copy.

If the Print to file box appears, instead of sending the document to ImageNow, a few things might be happening.

  1. The Printer setup was not done as admin, and the resulting printer does not have sufficient permissions
  2. The registry key did not save the path to the linkpage.ini file, or there is an error in the path. Check for extra spaces and other discrepancies.
  3. The process of downloading and unzipping the ImageNow Mail Merge folder has created an extra folder. Remove the extra folder so the paths are correct.

If the Mail Merge process begins but stops with an error that the Doctype is not found, one of these things is happening:

  1. The searchkey. ini is not configured correctly for the field that the department is trying to import. Request a document they had successfully merged into ImageNow, if available and compare it with the “searchkey.ini”. Spaces and capitalization matter.
  2. The test document header may have artifacts. Copy and paste into Notepad to strip any extra formatting and then copy and paste into a new text document.

OTHER Issues:

In some cases, the existing config files that a department supplies may be from 2007. Only the “Updated” config files from 2015 will work with the current version of IN. The settings may need to be transcribed into a newer config file.

This can also be an issue with the installer. Older versions will not work. Even if the installer was provided by vendor support, verify that it is the most recent.
