Keeping your computer secure and up to date is important. To make this easier, we are changing the way Windows updates are installed on managed workstations. This guide explains the changes in a side by side comparison.
Detailed Information
Microsoft is retiring the old system we used to deliver Windows security updates. To stay up to date, we are switching to a new system called Windows Update for Business (WUfB). This new system is more reliable, easier to use, and works similarly to how updates install on personal devices.
Old Method using Software Center
Previously, you would find available updates in the Software Center under the "Updates" tab. Once updates were installed, a countdown timer would appear, reminding you to restart your device. This timer could not be closed and remained on your screen until the restart was completed.

Old notification countdown timer that cannot be closed.

New Method using Windows Update for Business (WUfB)
With Windows Update for Business (WUfB), updates still install automatically. However, instead of using the Software Center, you can check for updates directly in Windows Settings:
- Open Settings
- Navigate to Windows Update
- View available updates and choose to install them, restart now, or wait.
This may look slightly different depending on your version of Windows, but the process remains the same.

When IT sets a deadline for updates, you will receive a notification that your device needs to restart. Unlike before, there is no permanent countdown timer on your screen.
You will have 48 hours to restart your device before it automatically restarts. You can do this at a convenient time before the deadline.
