University of Maine System provides ChatGPT Edu access to eligible students, faculty, and staff. This guide explains how to activate your account and sign in to the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace.
Eligibility
ChatGPT Edu is available to the following eligible UMS community members:
- Faculty
- Currently enrolled students taking courses during the current semester
- Staff
Before You Begin
You will need an active UMS account and an email address ending in @maine.edu.
If you already have a personal ChatGPT account associated with your @maine.edu email address, see ChatGPT: Merging Your Account before continuing.
Log In to ChatGPT

Go to chatgpt.com.

On the Log in or sign up screen, enter your UMS email address ending in @maine.edu in the email address field.
Important: Do not select Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft, Continue with Apple, or another authentication option. Enter your @maine.edu address in the email field and select Continue.

On the How do you want to log in? screen, select University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu.
Important: Select the University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu option at the top of the screen. Choosing Google, Microsoft, Apple, or another option may sign you in to a personal account instead of the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace.

You will be redirected to the UMS single sign-on page. Enter your UMS credentials and complete multifactor authentication if prompted.

If prompted to choose a workspace, select University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu.

After signing in, confirm that the UMS workspace name or logo appears in the sidebar, workspace selector, or account menu. This confirms that you are using the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace rather than a personal account.
Troubleshooting
The University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu Option Does Not Appear
Confirm that you entered an email address ending in @maine.edu. If you entered a personal email address, sign out and begin the login process again using your UMS email address.
You Signed In to a Personal ChatGPT Account
You may have selected Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft, Continue with Apple, or another authentication option.
Sign out of ChatGPT completely, return to chatgpt.com, and follow the login instructions again. Enter your @maine.edu email address and select University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu when prompted.
You Already Have a ChatGPT Account Using Your UMS Email Address

You Cannot Access the UMS Workspace
Confirm that your UMS account is active and that you are currently eligible for ChatGPT Edu access. Access may depend on your current employment or enrollment status.
