If you currently use ChatGPT with an @maine.edu email address, this guide will help you prepare your account and move into the University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu workspace.
Important: All ChatGPT accounts associated with @maine.edu email addresses will move to the UMS-managed ChatGPT Edu workspace on October 1, 2026. You can complete the migration earlier so you have time to review your content and address anything that does not transfer.

Before beginning the migration, review the information below so you know what content may need to be saved separately.

Step 1: Review Your Existing Account
Review the content in your current ChatGPT account and decide what you want to keep.
Check the following:
- Chat history and conversations
- Projects
- Custom GPTs
- Custom Instructions
- Memories
- Canvas documents
- Library images
- Shared conversations and Projects
Step 2: Save Content That May Not Transfer
- Copy your Custom Instructions into a document or note.
- Download any Library images you want to keep.
- Save important Canvas documents outside ChatGPT.
- Make note of any memories or personalization settings you want to restore later.
- Record any sharing links or permissions you may need to recreate.
You can also ask ChatGPT Work to help organize and bundle content before migration. For example, you can ask it to summarize important conversations, consolidate instructions into a document, or collect key information from several chats.
Tip: Do not manually recreate Projects or Custom GPTs before migration. Wait until the migration is complete, then review what transferred and recreate only what is missing.
Step 3: Submit Your Migration Request
- Go to the UMS ChatGPT Edu migration overview.
- Select Continue.
- Select Submit request.
- Wait up to 40 minutes for the request to process.
Step 4: Sign In to ChatGPT Edu
- Go to chatgpt.com.
- Enter your UMS email address ending in @maine.edu.
- Do not select Google, Microsoft, Apple, or another authentication method.
- Select University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu.
- Authenticate with your UMS credentials through single sign-on.
- If prompted to choose a workspace, select University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu.

Step 5: Review Your Account After Migration
After signing in to the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace, review your account and confirm that the content you expected to transfer is available.
- Paste your Custom Instructions back into ChatGPT.
- Restore any memories or preferences you want to continue using.
- Re-share any Projects or conversations that still need to be shared.
- Recreate only the Projects or Custom GPTs that did not transfer.
- Confirm that important chats and files are available.
If You Have a Paid Subscription
If your current account has a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription, review your subscription status as part of the migration.
Subscriptions purchased directly through ChatGPT may be canceled when the account moves to the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace. Refund eligibility and timing are determined by OpenAI.
If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you may need to cancel the subscription manually through the applicable app-store settings.
After the Migration
Your migrated content becomes part of the institutionally managed UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace. If you later lose access to the workspace because your employment, enrollment, or eligibility ends, you may also lose access to content stored there.
The migration is permanent and cannot be reversed.
