This guide helps you prepare your existing @maine.edu ChatGPT account and move it into the University of Maine System ChatGPT Edu workspace. You will decide what should happen to your existing content, save anything important, and begin the migration.
Your account will move. You choose what happens to your content.
All ChatGPT accounts associated with an @maine.edu email address will move to the UMS ChatGPT Edu workspace on October 1, 2026. Before the move, choose whether to transfer supported content into the UMS workspace or export it as an archive.
⇄

Have a Plus or Pro subscription?
Subscriptions purchased directly through ChatGPT may be canceled and refunded on a prorated basis when your account moves. App Store and Google Play subscriptions may require separate cancellation.
Before you begin: Moving into UMS ChatGPT Edu is required for ChatGPT accounts associated with an @maine.edu email address. You are choosing what happens to the content in your existing workspace. Review and save anything important before submitting the migration request. Once the migration prompt appears, you may not be able to close it and return to your existing workspace.
Step 1: Understand Your Migration Options
Review the transfer and export options now so you know what each one will do. You will make your selection later, after you begin the migration and ChatGPT prompts you to choose.
Transfer existing history and GPTs
Choose this option when you want supported chats and Custom GPTs moved into UMS ChatGPT Edu. The existing workspace is deleted after the transfer.
Best for: Most users who want to continue using their existing supported content.

Export and delete history
Choose this option when you do not want your existing content moved into UMS ChatGPT Edu. ChatGPT creates an archive file and deletes the existing workspace.
Important: The export does not restore your chats as normal conversations in the UMS workspace.

Step 2: Save Content You Want to Keep
Before starting the migration, save any content you may need to restore or recreate later.
- Copy your Custom Instructions into a document or note.
- Download any Library images you want to keep.
- Save important Canvas documents outside ChatGPT.
- Note any memories or personalization settings you may want to restore.
- Record any sharing links or permissions you may need to recreate.
Have a plus subscription? You can also ask ChatGPT Work to help organize and bundle content before migration. For example, ask it to summarize important conversations, consolidate instructions into a document, or collect key information from several chats.
Do not recreate content yet: Wait until the migration is complete before rebuilding Projects or Custom GPTs. Review what transferred first, then recreate only what is missing.
Step 3: Begin the Migration
Once you understand the options and have saved anything important, request access to begin the migration. After the request is processed, return to ChatGPT and follow the prompts to choose whether to transfer supported content or export your existing content.
