Body
Remove Microsoft Authenticator from your University of Maine System (UMS) account when you replace your phone or no longer want to use the app to verify sign-ins.
⚠️ WARNING: Removing an MFA sign-in method does not remove the MFA requirement from your UMS account. Keep at least one sign-in method on your account at all times. If Microsoft Authenticator is your only method, add a new method before you remove it. If you remove all of your methods,
you may be locked out of your account. If you can't complete MFA, contact the
IT Service Desk for help.
Removing Microsoft Authenticator takes two steps: remove your account from the Authenticator app, then remove Microsoft Authenticator from your security info. Removing the account from the app alone does not remove the method from your account.
Removing Microsoft Authenticator on iOS (iPhone/iPad)
Step 1: Remove your account from the Authenticator app
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Tap your University of Maine System account.
- Tap the Settings (gear) icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap either
- Yes, this app only if you use your UMS account with other apps on your iOS device
- All apps on this device if you do not use your UMS account with other apps on your iOS device
Step 2: Remove Microsoft Authenticator from your security info
- Open a web browser and go to accounts.maine.edu/mymfa.
- Sign in to your account.
- Under "Security info," find Microsoft Authenticator and select Delete next to it.
- When prompted, select OK to confirm.
Removing Microsoft Authenticator on Android
Step 1: Remove your account from the Authenticator app
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Tap your University of Maine System account.
- Tap the Settings (gear) icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap Remove account again to confirm.
Step 2: Remove Microsoft Authenticator from your security info
After you remove your account, the app redirects you to your security info page. If it does not, open a web browser and go to accounts.maine.edu/mymfa.
- Sign in to your account if prompted.
- Under "Security info," find Microsoft Authenticator and tap Delete next to it.
- When prompted, tap OK to confirm.
INFO: On Android, your UMS account may still appear in the Authenticator app after you complete these steps. This is because Android stores your account on the device so other Microsoft apps can sign you in.
Step 3 (optional): Remove your account from your Android device
Only complete this step if you no longer use your UMS account in any other app on this phone, such as Outlook, Teams, or OneDrive. Removing it signs you out of those apps.
- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Accounts. On some phones, this is called Passwords & accounts or Users & accounts.
- Tap your UMS account (listed as a work or school account).
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap Remove account again to confirm.
Menu names vary by phone manufacturer and Android version.
