Updating Zoom on personally owned devices

How do I update the Zoom Workplace application on my personally owned computer or mobile device?

Zoom regularly releases updates to the Zoom Workplace application, including new features, bug fixes, security improvements, and other enhancements. Keeping Zoom up to date helps ensure the best experience when participating in meetings and using Zoom services.

This article provides instructions for updating Zoom on a personally owned device.

Instructions

  1. Windows, macOS, and Linux

If Zoom Workplace is already installed on your computer:

  2. Open the Zoom Workplace application.
  3. Sign in to Zoom.
  4. Select your profile picture in the upper-right corner of the application.
  5. Select Check for Updates.
  6. If an update is available, Zoom will download and install the newer version.
  7. Follow any additional prompts to complete the installation.
  8. Restart Zoom if prompted.

If an optional update is postponed, Zoom may prompt you again the next time you sign in.

Recommended Practice

Install Zoom updates when they become available. Keeping the Zoom Workplace application current provides access to recent features and fixes and can prevent issues caused by falling below Zoom's minimum supported application version.

If you need to join a meeting immediately and cannot complete the application update, Zoom may provide a Join from your browser option that allows you to participate using the Zoom Web App.

Types of Zoom Updates

Zoom identifies three types of updates:

Web-only updates – Updates made available through Zoom's web resources for fixes that are being tested. Mandatory updates – Updates that must be installed before you can continue using the affected Zoom application or service. Optional updates – Updates that can be installed when offered or postponed until later.

Zoom may also display a notification when a new mobile application update is available.

Zoom Requires an Update Before Joining a Meeting

Zoom maintains minimum supported versions of its desktop and mobile applications. If your installed version falls below the required minimum, Zoom may require an update before allowing you to sign in or join a meeting.

If an update is required:

Select Update when prompted. Allow Zoom to download and install the update. Reopen Zoom if necessary. Sign in or join the meeting again.

Zoom may also display a notification when a new mobile application update is available.

iPhone and iPad

Zoom updates for iPhone and iPad are distributed through Apple's App Store.

Open the App Store. Search for Zoom Workplace. Select Update if an update is available. Allow the update to finish before reopening Zoom.

You may need administrator privileges on your computer to uninstall or install the application. Zoom recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the application when a personal, unmanaged device incorrectly reports that an IT administrator is required to perform the update.

Note: If your personally owned device has a work or school management profile installed, it may still be considered a managed device. In that situation, contact the IT organization responsible for managing the device or profile before removing or reinstalling Zoom.

Android Devices

Zoom updates for Android devices are distributed through the device's application store.

Open the Google Play Store. Search for Zoom Workplace. Select Update if an update is available. Allow the update to finish before reopening Zoom.

Zoom may also display a notification when a mandatory or optional update is available.

If "Check for Updates" Is Not Available

If Check for Updates does not appear in the Zoom menu, the installed version of Zoom may have been installed using a configuration that disables user-initiated updates. For example, Zoom notes that installations performed with its MSI installer can have automatic updates disabled and the Check for Updates option removed.

For a personally owned and unmanaged computer, you can try the following:

Uninstall the existing Zoom Workplace application. Download the current Zoom Workplace application from the official Zoom Downloads website. Reinstall Zoom. Open Zoom and sign in. Check for updates again.
