Every fall, Apple releases a new version of macOS. As standard operation procedure, EUT will restrict access to the latest upgrade until it has been tested and all software has been updated to support it. Within 60 days of release, EUT will vet the initial release and update packages such as print drivers and antivirus. EUT will then advertise it in January for all users to upgrade.
If a user absolutely needs to upgrade for application compatibility, they may upgrade the operating system using System Settings > Software Update. Please be aware that some software may not work correctly until updated by the vendor.
Detailed Information
Due to changes in modern macOS management, major macOS upgrades like 27 (Golden Gate) EUT can no longer defer upgrades. In this case, End User Technology recommends not upgrading to the latest operating system immediately to give time for the initial bugs to be worked out. Please be aware, users should upgrade the latest preferred version as soon as possible to avoid issues with software compatibility. This includes printing, office, remote tools, etc.

Still being patched: MacOS 15 Sequoia
MacOS 14 support ends Fall 2026.
Must upgrade immediately: MacOS 13 and earlier.
What Updates Should Be Applied
- App store updates
- Security updates
- Minor operating system updates
- Major operating system updates
- After EUT has announced its release.
How is the User Notified
When new software updates is available, macOS Software Update will appear with a red dot and a number of updates available. Major operating system upgrades will appear at the bottom and require the end user to initiate it, so upgrades do not occur automatically. MacOS patches such as 26.x and 26.x.x will appear and can be applied during the next reboot.
