Email notifications from OneDrive/Sharepoint are being sent to the Spam folder in Gmail

UMS Onedrive and Sharepoint users are not receiving automated email notifications at their @maine.edu email address in Gmail. These notifications are ending up filtered into the Spam folder in Gmail. This is due to how both Microsoft creates and sends their emails and how Gmail's Spam detection algorithm works. Unfortunately, UMS IT is unable to modify the settings that cause this to happen. However, the following work-around solution allows an individual email recipient to modify their settings in Gmail to prevent these items from going into the Spam folder.

Solution

  1. Within Gmail, click on the Settings gear icon at the top of the page
  2. Click on See all settings on the Quick settings pane that displays
  3. Click on the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab at the top of the Settings page
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of any filters already added and click on Create a new filter
  5. In the From field enter no-reply@sharepointonline.com and click on Create filter
  6. On the list of filter options, check off the box next to Never send it to Spam
  7. If you would like to use this filter to remove any existing email notifications from the Spam folder, click on Also apply filter to X matching conversations
  8. Click on Create filter to save and run the filter
  9. All new incoming notifications from OneDrive or Sharepoint will go into your inbox, instead of the Spam folder
