Google Chrome error: side-by-side configuration is incorrect

Google Chrome does not work when launched, or users encounter an error after logging into Windows that states: 

ERROR MESSAGE:  "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar\Google Chrome.lmk The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail..."

Solution

Chrome needs to be repaired or reinstalled. Running the repair is the quickest resolution. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Got to Start and type Control Panel and select it from the options. 
  2. Select Under Programs "Uninstall a program."
  3. Select Google Chrome from the list as shown below and select the option Repair from the top banner.
