Detailed Information

What is data stewardship?

Data Stewardship can be viewed from many perspectives.  In the broadest sense it can involve management and oversight of an organization's data assets.  Within the UMS, data governance is largely responsible for the creation of data policies and standards, while data stewardship involves the diverse activities of data management and protection, including the enforcement of policies and standards. Data stewardship focuses on implementation of procedures that align with the relevant policies and standards for the intake, storage, processing and transmission of data to internal and external systems. Compliance, control, and data protections are considered key stewardship functions that contribute to managing the risk of the institution.

At the University, data stewards are often the first contact point for any questions related to student, academic, research or business-use data. This website is intended to aid stewards in the finding of information needed to answer those questions, as well as resources available to help with interpretation where relevant.

Data Stewardship resources on this page are organized first by database, then by functional areas, or areas of expertise.
