Data Standard: Session ID Data Issue Documentation

This article provides historical information regarding the 2022 Data Governance project focused on standardizing the Session Codes used across the UMS institutions.

Detailed Information

Report Summary

Session ID is a data field associated with a class section to indicate when a course is taking place within a given term. Sessions include full-term sessions, and shorter sessions of a fixed or dynamic design, with dates indicated in the class section itself. This proposal for Session ID consistency is one of many standardizations proposed in support of cross-campus enrollment and transparency for initiatives such as the UMS Unified Catalog, as well as increasing ease and accuracy of reporting. This proposal has the following specific goal:

  • Align Session ID codes and descriptions across the UMS

Forum Notes

  • Tidying up the codes for student clarity and transparency
  • Standardize use of session ID codes with common definitions

Comments & Questions

  • How is this easier for students? Students are often looking for “classes that haven’t started yet”.

    • Clear codes make clear what session or even what part of a session that a student can choose.

  • Would be helpful if we could have a date-based search that brings up all of the courses available in a specific timeframe

    • Different UMS searches have different capacity for executing this. The Distance Search does allow for searching based on date.
    • This feedback is helpful in potential modifications to our search capabilities. Searching by date wasn’t part of the scope of this project, but great feedback that we will take to the course search administrators.
