Get Started with Microsoft Authenticator

Summary

Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your University of Maine System account by adding Microsoft Authenticator on your phone and a passkey on the computer you use most often.

Your University of Maine System (UMS) ID gives you access to everything from course materials and grades to financial and identity information. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another layer of protection to help prevent account theft and impersonation.

Before you begin: Getting started takes about 10 minutes. Have your phone and the computer you use most often with you before you begin.

1. Add Microsoft Authenticator on Your Phone

 

You will use your phone and computer together for this step. Follow the interactive walkthrough below.

2. Add a Sign-in Method on Your Computer

 

Choose the option that matches the computer and browser you use most often.

Windows Hello

For most Windows computers. Use your device PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition.

Set Up Windows Hello
Mac

Use Touch ID or your Mac password and save the passkey in iCloud Keychain.

Set Up a Passkey on Mac

Google Password Manager

Use Chrome and save the passkey in Google Password Manager.

Set Up a Passkey in Chrome
You are all set.

You now have one sign-in method on your phone and one on your computer.

Need Help or a Different Option?

The phone-and-computer setup above is the standard option. Other MFA methods are available if you use different devices, do not have a smartphone, or need another way to sign in.
