Webex Calling

Webex Calling is the University of Maine System’s supported softphone service. It allows employees to make and receive work calls on multiple devices, while retaining their existing campus phone line if applicable. The service also ensures compliance with updated E911 regulations, which require accurate location information for emergency calls.

Three setup options are available, ranging from no-cost mobile access to full cloud calling with RedSky E911 coverage and optional call center functionality.

Included at No Cost

Webex Mobile Calling – Use the Webex mobile app on a cellular-capable smartphone (iOS or Android) to make and receive UMS work calls. If you are a hybrid worker, your campus desk phone and your mobile app will both ring on incoming calls, so you keep your same campus line across locations. This option relies on your phone’s carrier for E911 compliance. Voicemails are delivered to your @maine.edu inbox as audio attachments. Departments are not charged for this service.

Webex Cloud Calling – Provides a licensed Webex softphone account covering up to five devices, which may include a desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet, and—at most campuses—an eligible desk phone. This option includes RedSky E911 service, ensuring compliance on non-cellular devices and aligning with updated emergency response laws. Features include cloud voicemail with playback and transcripts, call history, one-click dialing, and quiet-hour scheduling. Departments are billed $200 per user per year.

Webex Cloud Calling with Call Center Integration – For departments such as IT, Admissions, or Student Services that need advanced call handling. This builds on Webex Cloud Calling with tools for call queues, transfers, and team-based call management. Departments are billed $200 per user per year.

How to Access

 

Mobile Calling (no cost) – Request a mobile softphone license. Install the Webex app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Sign in with your @maine.edu credentials.

Cloud Calling or Call Center – Request a Webex Cloud Calling license. Install the Webex app on supported devices (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android). On first login, provide your physical work location to enable E911 compliance.

Eligibility

  • Employees – Remote and hybrid employees may request Webex Calling.
  • Mobile Calling – Available to any eligible employee with a compliant smartphone.
  • Cloud Calling – Available with supervisor approval. Departments are billed $200 per user per year.
