If you received an email titled "Security Alert: Authentication method change on your account," this article explains why you got it and what to do.
Detailed Information
The University of Maine System (UMS) automatically sends this notification any time a change is made to the authentication methods on your account. This includes adding, removing, or changing a passkey, the Microsoft Authenticator app, or another multi-factor authentication (MFA) sign-in method.
Why you received this email
This is an automated security notification, not a message from a person. It is sent every time your account's authentication methods change, whether you made the change yourself or someone else did. It always comes from entra-it-security-alerts@maine.edu.
Understanding the email
- Sender: always
entra-it-security-alerts@maine.edu
- Your name and account: confirms whose account changed
- Date and time: when the change happened, shown in your local time zone
- Activity: a short description of what changed, for example registering a passkey
- Origin: the general internet address the change came from, which can help you tell whether it matches a device or location you recognize
WARNING: Watch for phishing look-alikes. This notification always comes from
entra-it-security-alerts@maine.edu and never asks you to click a link to "verify" your password or enter credentials outside the official sign-in page. If a similar-looking email comes from a different address or asks you to sign in through a link, do not click it.
