How to re-enroll in Eduroam WiFi for Mac device(s)

If you originally enrolled in Eduroam WiFi prior to February 2022, and are using a Mac, you may need to re-enroll and the following steps will walk you through how to re-enrolling. The first four steps will apply (and an eduroam profile present) only if you enrolled in eduroam prior to February 2022.

Instructions

Network Maine changed the enrollment method for Eduroam for Mac users in February 2022. Follow these steps to re-enroll to Eduroam.

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Profiles. ("Profiles" may or may not be present. If you don't see a Profiles icon, skip to 5.)
  2. Select the eduroam profile at the top left. (If you don't see an eduroam profile, skip to 5.)
  3. Click the "-" icon to delete it, close the window
  4. Quit System Preferences, and restart.
  5. Follow the minimal eduroam enrollment instructions here - http://wifi.maine.edu/eduroam
  6. Once enrolled, go to Apple Menu
    • System Preferences
    • Network
    • Wi-Fi (select on left)
    • Advanced (on right)
    • Wi-Fi (tab)
    • in Preferred networks, move eduroam to the top
    • individually select and remove all of the following networks in the list - tempest, eduroam-setup, MaineEDU-guest.
    • Press OK, click Apply in the next screen, and close System Preferences.

If you are still unable to connect to Eduroam after completing the steps above, please continue with the steps below.

  1. In the Finder's menu bar, select Go > Utilities. In the Utilities folder, find Terminal, and open it. You'll get a window where you can type - or paste in a command.
  2. Select and copy the following line, (which may appear on two lines in your window, although it's really one continuous line). It begins with "sudo" and ends with "plist"
    • sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.network.eapolclient.configuration.plist
  3. Paste it into the Terminal window, and press the return key.
  4. You'll be prompted for a password. This is your local macOS account password (which you use to log into your computer at startup), not your UMS MaineStreet password. When you type the password, you won't see anything on the screen. When you're done typing your password, press the return key, and you can then quit Terminal.  (If you type incorrectly, the screen will change, and prompt you again for your password.
  5. You're done with the removal process, and you can try to enroll in eduroam once again by following these instructions: http://wifi.maine.edu/eduroam
    • As mentioned, type quickly and don't linger, or the connection will time out, and you have no recourse except to restart the computer and try again from scratch.
    • As a reminder, you'll need to type your entire email address in the initial eduroam screen.
    • If you're successful getting through that screen, you may be prompted to "approve" the certificate by entering the password to your local macOS account.
