Get Started with Microsoft MFA

This article walks you through setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your University of Maine System (UMS) account. You'll register two sign-in methods: one on your phone and one on your computer. Having both means you can always sign in, even if one device isn't available.

Setting up MFA means setting it up in two places

Your phone works anywhere, and a passkey signs you in fast on your own computer. Set up both now so one is always there when you need it.

Before you begin: Getting started takes about 10 minutes. Have your phone and the computer you use most often with you before you begin.

Step 1: Add Microsoft Authenticator on Your Phone

Select your phone's operating system below. Each guide includes step-by-step instructions, a video walkthrough, and troubleshooting help, all in one place.

Android

For Android phones and tablets.

Don't stop here: Adding Microsoft Authenticator on your phone is only step 1 of 2. If you stop now, you will not be able to sign in without your phone. Continue to Step 2 below to add a passkey on your computer too.

Step 2: Add a Passkey on Your Computer

Choose the option that matches the computer and browser you use most often, then follow the on-screen prompts.

Windows Hello

For most Windows computers. Use your device PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition.

Use Touch ID or your Mac password and save the passkey in iCloud Keychain.

Google Password Manager

Use Chrome and save the passkey in Google Password Manager.

Hardware Security Key

Use a FIDO2 security key, such as a YubiKey, on any computer.

You are all set.

You now have one sign-in method on your phone and one on your computer.

Feel free to add MFA on any other computers or devices you use regularly.

Why MFA Matters

Your University of Maine System (UMS) ID gives you access to everything from course materials and grades to financial and identity information. Why should I set up two sign-in methods?

Setting up a second sign-in method helps prevent you from being locked out of your account. Your phone may be your primary method, but it may not always be available if it is lost, replaced, damaged, or left at home. A backup method gives you another way to sign in without contacting the IT Service Desk. Without one, you may need to wait until the Service Desk is open before you can regain access, including during evenings, weekends, or holidays.
