Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - Obtaining & Using Bypass Codes

Locked out of your account? Without your smart device? Deleted the DUO app and having issues? Using an IT-generated bypass code can help you re-access MFA Manager to get backup codes, add a new smart device, and more.

WARNING: Bypass codes expire after five authentications or twelve hours pass from the time they are issued, whichever happens first.
DANGER: This knowledge ONLY applies for bypass codes, generated by an IT representative in UserID Manager, and NOT backup codes, which can be generated by any MFA user at the website https://accounts.maine.edu/mfa

Instructions

  1. Obtain a bypass code from an IT representative. This can most easily be accomplished by calling 800.696.4357, or emailing help@maine.edu to set up a Zoom appointment if calling is not an option.
  2. Launch MFA, either by accessing the MFA Manager using this hyperlink or logging onto another site that would engage the MFA prompt, like MyCampus.
  3. Select "Other options" on the screen.
  4. Select "Bypass code."
  5. You should now be able to access whatever service you previously selected. If you are in MFA Manager, you can add a new device, remove an old device, etc. depending on your needs.

Environment
