Microsoft Word Run-time error '53': File not found on Mac

If you are experiencing the following "Run-time error '53': File not found" error while using the Microsoft Word program on a Macintosh computer, this article is for you.

Detailed Information

  1. Quit Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.

  2. Copy the entire line displayed in the row below; you're going to paste it into a window in Step 4. Make sure you don't miss the tilde at the beginning of the line. (Hint: to easily select the whole line, just triple-click on the line. Then copy it. If you have any difficulty, you can contact IT Services at help@maine.edu or 1-800-696-4357.

    ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Startup.localized/Word

  3. Click on a blank area on the screen so you're in the Macintosh Finder. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Go > Go to Folder

  4. Paste in the copied line from #2, and press return.

  5. You will open a folder. Select the item that says "linkCreation.dotm" or "linkCreation", and drag it to the Trash.

  6. Reopen Word, and the error message should be gone.
