Power BI Service and Premium Capacity Path from Creator Workstation to Published on the Web

Once your report is created, you can share it in a couple of ways. If you need to share your reports with a large number of UMS employees, or need a boost in data handling performance and capacity, you can request to have a workspace upgraded to our Premium Capacity within Power BI Service.

Power BI Service is an online portal where all sharing, content distribution, and consumption happen. Power BI Service has limited report creation abilities, so it is recommended that you create reports in Power BI Desktop and publish them to the workspace in Power BI Service for further collaboration and distribution.

The following image shows the progression of audience size. From you at your workstation, the audience grows to your collaborators when you save content to the UMS Power BI HUB SharePoint library. Larger audiences are tapped in Workspaces and Apps in Power BI Service, and even free license users can be reached if your App is moved to the UMS dedicated Premium capacity.

The final step in the image, publishing to the web opens up your reports to the general public and requires strict security measures. Publishing an App in Premium Capacity makes it more secure and preferable than publishing to the web.

Premium Capacity

Power BI Premium is the capacity reserved in Power BI Service for the University of Maine System. Once a workspace is upgraded to Premium Capacity, an even wider audience, including those with free licenses, is able to view your work. This will also be where, ultimately you will connect to secured reports & datasets.

By utilizing our Premium Capacity, Pro users unlock a dedicated processing environment with larger individual dataset sizes (1G vs 10G) and more frequent automatic refresh times (8 vs 48) per day.

Power BI Premium is not a standalone application in that it has to work with Power BI Pro in tandem. Power BI Pro is still required to publish reports, collaborate with colleagues in Workspaces, and engage in other related activities. However, Power BI Pro is not required to consume content in Premium Capacity.  See our licensing page for more information.

If your workspace would benefit from utilizing Premium Capacity, please use this Request Form.
