Unable to log in due to disabled MFA error after password or username change

How to address Duo error messages after an account change.

Detailed Information

Possible error messages received

  • "Your two-factor account is disabled. Contact an administrator for assistance."
  • "Account disabled. Your Duo account is disabled, you are unable to access this application. Please contact your helpdesk."

Why this happens

This is likely caused by a status change on your account, such as changing your password after it expired or activating a reinstated account.

Instructions

If your account status recently changed and you receive one of these errors, wait at least 35 minutes, then sign in to the MFA Manager utility.

  1. Wait at least 35 minutes since your most recent account change (i.e., password reset, username change, or status change).
  2. Sign in to the Multi-Factor Authentication Manager at accounts.maine.edu/mfa with your username and new password.

If this does not resolve the issue, contact the IT Service Desk for additional assistance.
