[MFA Modernization Pilot] Sign In with MFA: Hardware Security Key (FIDO2)

This article walks you through signing into your University of Maine System (UMS) account using a hardware security key as your passkey multi-factor authentication (MFA) method.

Before You Begin

You will need both of the following before starting:

  • 💻 The device you are signing in on
  • 🔑 Your hardware security key (FIDO2), such as a YubiKey, plugged in or ready to insert

Instructions

INFO: These instructions use a Windows 11 computer. If you are using a different operating system, such as macOS, Linux, or Windows 10, your options may look slightly different.
  1. 💻 When prompted, enter your full @maine.edu email address, then click Next.
  2. 💻 Enter your password, then click Sign in.
  3. 💻 You will see the message "Your device will open a security window. Follow the instructions there to sign in."
  4. 💻 In the Windows Security "Choose a passkey" box, click Security key.
  5. 💻 In the Windows Security "Sign in with a passkey" box, enter your Security Key PIN, then click OK.
  6. 🔑 When prompted, touch your security key.
  7. 💻 If asked "Stay signed in?" click Yes if you are on your own device.
  8. 💻 You are now signed in to your UMS account.

Environment

  • Applies to all University of Maine System (UMS) accounts
  • Requires a registered FIDO2 hardware security key (such as a YubiKey)
  • Requires a web browser on a computer to complete sign-in
