Setting up Duo Mobile on your iPhone or iPad lets you approve sign-in requests and protects your University of Maine System (UMS) account with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Instructions
INFO: You will switch between two devices: your iPhone or iPad, and a computer. Have both nearby before you start.
Step 1: Install Duo Mobile on your iOS device
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the App Store.
- Search for and install Duo Mobile.
- Leave the app installed but closed for now.
WARNING: When you search for "Duo Mobile" in the App Store, make sure you select "Duo Mobile" from "Duo Security LLC" — not any other app that appears as an advertisement at the top of the list.
Step 2: Start enrollment on your computer
- Go to accounts.maine.edu/mfa
- Sign in with your UMS account if you are prompted to.
- Select "Enroll."
- On the "Protect your University of Maine System Account" screen, select "Start Setup."
- When asked "What type of device are you adding?" choose "Tablet."
WARNING: Choose "Tablet" even if you are setting up a phone. Choosing "Mobile phone" asks you for a phone number, and UMS MFA does not use phone numbers.
- When asked "What type of tablet are you adding?" choose "iOS."
- Select "I have the Duo Mobile App installed."
Step 3: Activate the app on your iOS device
- Open Duo Mobile and select "Set up account."
- If you do not see "Set up account," select "Add +" instead.
- Select "Use QR Code."
- If you are unable to scan the QR code, select "Get an activation link instead."
- Scan the QR Code displayed on your computer with your iOS device.
- You will see a "University of Maine System" confirmation screen, tap "Save."
- When activation succeeds, a green checkmark appears on the screen.
- Back on your computer, select "Continue."
- MFA is now active on your account.
