[MFA Modernization Pilot] Add MFA Sign-in Method: Passkey on iPhone or iPad (iOS)

⚠️ WARNING: This article is intended for participants in the MFA Modernization Pilot only. If you are not a pilot participant, the information in this article may not apply to you. Contact the IT Service Desk if you have questions about your current sign-in experience.

This article walks you through adding a passkey to your University of Maine System (UMS) account using an iPhone or iPad. A passkey lets you sign in using your device's biometrics, such as Face ID or Touch ID, or your device PIN instead of a password.

ℹ️ INFO: We recommend setting up at least two sign-in methods on two different devices, such as this passkey on your phone plus the Microsoft Authenticator app or a passkey on your computer, so you are not locked out if you lose access to one device.

ICON KEY: 📱 = do this on your mobile device

Before you begin

  • 📱 An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later
  • 📱 An iCloud account, signed in, with iCloud Passwords (External Link) enabled. Most iPhones and iPads have this turned on by default, so you may already meet this requirement.

Creating your passkey

  1. 📱 On your iPhone or iPad, open your default browser, Safari, and go to aka.ms/mysecurityinfo. Sign in if prompted.
  2. 📱 Under "Security info," tap Add sign-in method.
  3. 📱 In the "Add a sign-in method" menu, select Passkey, then tap Add.
  4. 📱 In the "Sign in faster with your face, fingerprint, or PIN" dialog, tap Next.
  5. 📱 In the "Setting up your passkey" dialog, tap Next.
  6. 📱 If prompted with a "Save a passkey?" sheet, tap Save in Passwords, then tap Add Passkey to confirm.
  7. 📱 In the "Let's name your passkey" box, enter a name for your passkey, for example "iPhone" or "iPad," then tap Next.
  8. 📱 In the "Passkey created" confirmation box, tap Done.
  9. 📱 You should now see Passkey (Synced) listed under your sign-in methods.

You have successfully added a passkey as an MFA sign-in method for your UMS account. If this is the only sign-in method on your account, we recommend adding a second one on a different device before you finish. See the other articles in the How-To Guides collection for additional methods.
