[MFA Modernization Pilot] Sign In with MFA: Microsoft Authenticator App

This article walks you through how to sign into your UMS account using the Microsoft Authenticator app as your MFA method.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have already set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. If you haven't done this yet, see Microsoft Entra MFA: How to Set Up the Microsoft Authenticator App before continuing.

  • 💻 A computer with a web browser
  • 📱 A mobile device (Android 14 or later, or iOS 17 or later)
  • 📱 The Microsoft Authenticator app updated to the latest version

Instructions

When you are prompted for MFA during sign-in:

  1. 💻 On your computer, you will see an "Approve sign in request" screen displaying a number. Keep this screen open.
  2. 📱 On your mobile device, open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  3. 📱 You will see an "Are you trying to sign in?" notification showing your @maine.edu address and approximate location.
  4. 📱 In the "Enter number here" field, type the number shown on your computer, then tap Yes.
  5. 💻 On your computer, you may be asked "Stay signed in?" If you are on your own device, click Yes.
  6. 💻 You are now signed in to your UMS account.
