Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

UMS Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds a second verification step when you sign in, so your account stays protected even if someone learns your password. UMS uses two MFA systems: Microsoft Entra MFA and Duo Security.

Microsoft Entra MFA and Duo Security are both in use across UMS. Duo Security is being phased out as services move to Entra. If you are not sure which system applies to you, see Determining Which MFA System You Should Use (Entra or Duo).

Charges for Service

  • There are no direct charges to departments or individuals for this service.
  • Departments or individuals may choose to purchase authentication devices, such as security keys or hardware tokens, for specific use cases beyond those provided by UMS:IT.

Microsoft Entra MFA
Microsoft Entra MFA is one of UMS's multi-factor authentication systems, adding a sign-in verification step to protect your account. This service offering covers registering a device and managing your Entra MFA verification methods.
Cisco Duo MFA
Duo Security is one of UMS's two multi-factor authentication systems, adding a second sign-in verification step to protect your account. This service offering covers registering a device and managing your Duo MFA verification methods.
Duo MFA Backup Codes
Generate your own Duo backup codes for use when your enrolled MFA device is unavailable.
Duo MFA Bypass Code
Call the UMS IT Service Desk to request a one-time bypass code if you're locked out of Duo MFA and have no backup options.
Duo MFA Device Management
Manage your Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) devices - add, update, or remove an enrolled device.
