Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - How do I enroll?

Tags Duo MFA

This article will provide a general overview of the Multi-Factor Authentication enrollment process. More detailed instructions are provided in separate linked articles.

Detailed Information

Eligibility

The first step in enrollment is to make sure you are eligible! In general MFA is available to all faculty and staff members of the University of Maine system. Students may have eligibility in certain situations.

You can confirm your current eligibility by selecting the "Manage multi-factor authentication" link at accounts.maine.edu.  If you believe the MFA manager is displaying incorrect eligibility information, please contact the UMS:IT Help Desk.

Device Selection

The next step in the process is deciding what type of device to use. We highly recommend that you use your smart phone with the Duo App, as you will normally have that with you. However there are a few other options including a code generator. You can find information on all available options here. To install the App on your phone please follow the instructions below:

Enrollment

INFO: Failed initial enrollment attempts, whether a code was lost or if the user deleted the Duo app mistakenly, are monitored and cleared by the MFA team within the next business day. Urgent requests may be made to IT, but it's generally best practice to wait 24-48 hours for the failed enrollment attempt to be cleared.
